Drawings and Illustrations
My work is an exploration of the internal landscape, captured through the tactile and disciplined medium of graphite on toned paper. By utilizing the neutral ground of the paper as a mid-tone, I am able to carve out light and shadow to reveal the raw, unvarnished emotional state of my subjects. I am driven by the "felt" experience of a moment—whether that is the weight of national grief or the fleeting electricity of a sugar high.
This collection highlights the vast spectrum of the human experience through three distinct archetypes:
The Disillusioned: In my depiction of Lady Justice, I modernize a classical icon to reflect contemporary anxieties. Seated at a bar with a cigarette and a White Claw, she is no longer a detached statue, but a weary citizen exhausted by the struggle to maintain democracy.
The Pure: My study of a child with an ice cream sundae captures the antithesis of that weariness. Here, the focus is on the explosive, unburdened joy found in sensory simplicity.
The Vulnerable: My figurative work, specifically the slumped nude, strips away narrative entirely to focus on the physical weight of the body. The posture serves as a universal language for fatigue and the quiet moments of being "undone."
Ultimately, my practice is a search for empathy. By documenting the specific physical cues of emotion—a slumped shoulder, a wide-eyed stare, or a heavy sigh—I invite the viewer to see their own vulnerabilities and triumphs reflected in the grain of the paper.
